We Have Come to Be Danced: A Poem by Jewel Mathieson
Dec 11, 2018Some poems you read. This one you feel in your hips.
Jewel Mathieson's "We Have Come to Be Danced" is a call to stop performing for other people and move the way your body actually wants to move. Not the polished, please-pick-me version of ourselves, but the wilder, more honest one underneath.
I come back to it because so much of what gets in the way of good sex is the same thing that gets in the way of good dancing: self-consciousness. Watching yourself from the outside. Wondering how you look instead of feeling what you feel.
This poem is a permission slip to come back into your body.

Try this
Put on one song you love. Close the door, close your eyes if you like, and move for the length of it with no mirror and no audience.
Notice where you hold back, and let that part move a little more. It's the same letting go that helps in bed, when you stop performing and start feeling.
