PE Practice, Step 1: Slow Down and Breathe

men's sexual health premature ejaculation Nov 07, 2017

Watch what your breath does the next time you get turned on. For most men I work with, it speeds up, goes shallow, or stops altogether, right as things get good.

That held breath is where Step 1 begins.

What this step is

Step 1 is slowing down and feeling your breath. It sounds too simple to matter. It's the most important part of ejaculation control, and everything else in this practice sits on top of it.

Breath does three things for you here.

It tells your body you're safe. Early ejaculation is often a fight-or-flight response to arousal. Slow, full breathing sends the opposite signal. And if the alarm does go off, you'll notice it sooner.

It gets you out of your head. Most men who finish early are busy thinking: Am I hard enough? How long has it been? Is she enjoying this? Breath brings you back to what you're actually feeling. Stop thinking, start feeling.

It shows you what's underneath. When men slow their breathing down, the real issue often shows itself: a flash of anxiety, a bit of shame, a sense of being rushed. You can't work with what you can't see.

Start on your own

Practice this during masturbation first. There's no one to perform for, so it's the easiest place to learn. For most men, it's also where control shows up first.

You can practice with a partner too, once you have the basics. More on that below.

How to practice

1. Go to the bathroom first. Arousal can trigger a stress response that brings on the urge to go. Take it off the table.

2. Give yourself time and privacy. At least 15 or 20 minutes where no one will walk in. Rushing is the habit you're unlearning.

3. Breathe before you touch. Lie down or sit comfortably. Take ten slow breaths, letting your belly rise on the inhale and soften on the exhale.

4. Touch yourself more slowly than usual. Whatever your normal pace is, go slower. Pay attention to how it actually feels, not to where it's going.

5. Keep coming back to the breath. Every time you notice you're holding your breath, or it's gone high and fast in your chest, breathe out and let the next breath drop into your belly.

6. Don't worry about the finish. If you come sooner than you hoped, that's fine. What matters in this step is how often you noticed your breath along the way.

Do this every time you masturbate, not just when you remember it's "practice."

Common snags

"I forget the moment it gets good." Everyone does. The noticing is the practice. Catching it late still counts.

"It feels like nothing's happening." Slowing down can feel flat at first, especially if you're used to fast, intense stimulation. Give it a few sessions. Sensation usually comes back when you stay with it.

"Now I'm thinking about breathing instead of sex." Early on, that's normal. Over time the breath becomes background, like it should be.

"Something uncomfortable came up." A memory, a feeling of shame, a wave of anxiety. That's the breath doing its job. Notice it without judging it. If it's heavy or keeps coming back, it's worth talking to someone.

Bringing in a partner

When you're ready, the same breath works with a partner. Tell them what you're practicing so slowing down doesn't read as disinterest. Something like:

"I'm learning to slow down and breathe during sex so I can last longer. If I pause, it's not you. I'm just catching my breath."

Ask if they're up for a slower pace, and check in as you go. Their yes, and their right to change their mind, are part of the practice.

What to notice before moving on

You're ready for Step 2 when:

  • You can stay aware of your breath for most of a session.
  • You can tell the difference between belly breathing and tight chest breathing.
  • You've started to notice the moment your breath stops, even if you can't always change it yet.

You don't need to have lasted longer yet. That's not this step's job.
