PE Practice, Step 4: Finding Your Arousal Sweet Spot
Jun 26, 2018There's a moment, a few minutes in, where it feels really good and you're not yet worried. Then it tips. Pleasure keeps climbing, and so does the voice saying "careful, careful."
Step 4 is about living in that first moment longer.
What this step is
Your sweet spot is the range on your arousal scale where you feel strong pleasure and your anxiety stays manageable, under 5.
The sweet spot is about holding the most pleasure in your body with the least anxiety.
Notice what that doesn't say. It doesn't say "feel as little as possible." Avoiding arousal backfires. If you feel like you're about to come the moment anything happens, anxiety goes up, not down.
Where you start
For most men starting out, the sweet spot is fairly low, somewhere around 3 to 5. That's where arousal is real but anxiety hasn't taken over.
Stay there. Don't push above 5 until you feel your arousal separating from your anxiety, meaning you can be turned on without your nervous system bracing.
How it rises
As your confidence grows, the sweet spot moves up, a little at a time:
- 3 to 5
- then 4 to 6
- then 5 to 7
- then 6 to 8
There's no schedule for this. Some men move up in a few weeks. For others, one range takes months. Move when your body is ready, not when you think you should be.
How to practice
This happens during masturbation first.
1. Set up. Bathroom first, time and privacy, a few slow belly breaths before you start, like in Step 1.
2. Build slowly to the top of your range. If your range is 3 to 5, touch yourself slowly until you're around a 5. Check your anxiety number too.
3. Hold. Stay there. Keep touching, keep breathing. Let yourself feel it. Notice what a 5 is actually like.
4. Come down with the anal breath. When you notice you're edging above your range, use the anal breath: breathe out and release your anus and pelvic floor. Ease off the touch if you need to.
5. Build again. Once you're back in range, start building again. Each rise and fall is a repetition.
6. Finish however you like. When you're done practicing, you can let yourself come. That's allowed.
How many breaths does it take?
At first, bringing your arousal down can take a lot of breaths, anywhere from 15 to 100. That's normal, and it's not a sign you're doing it wrong.
With practice, it usually gets much faster. Many of the men I work with eventually need only a few anal breaths, sometimes about three. Some take longer to get there.
Common snags
"I went over and came." That happens to everyone. You learned where your edge is today. Next time, start coming down a little sooner.
"I'm so careful I barely feel anything." That's avoiding arousal, not holding it. Let yourself go a bit higher within your range. Pleasure is the point.
"I want to jump to 6 to 8 now." Moving up too fast usually brings the anxiety back. If your anxiety number climbs above 5, drop back a range for a while. One step back, two forward.
"It works alone but not with my partner." Very common. Your sweet spot with a partner may be lower than when you're alone, at least for a while. Start lower there.
With a partner
When your sweet spot feels steady alone, bring it into partnered sex. Let your partner know you might slow down, pause, or switch what you're doing to stay in range. Ask if they're up for that, and check in along the way.
You might say: "When I slow down, it's because I want to stay with you longer, not because something's wrong. If you want something different in that moment, tell me."
Pauses don't have to be dead time. Kissing, hands, mouth: all of it counts as sex.
What to notice before moving on
You're ready for Step 5 when:
- You can hold yourself in your current range for a good stretch of a session.
- You can come back down with your breath most of the time.
- Your anxiety stays under 5 while you're in range.
- You've moved your sweet spot up at least once, even by a point.
